What is an XML sitemap?

An XML sitemap is a file that lists all the important URLs on your website. It helps search engines like Google discover pages they might not find through normal crawling, especially on large sites or pages with few internal links.

Does Google require a sitemap?

Not strictly. Google can find most pages through links. But sitemaps are strongly recommended for sites with 500+ pages, new sites with few backlinks, and sites with pages that are not well-linked internally.

What does priority mean in a sitemap?

Priority (0.0-1.0) signals relative importance within your own site. 1.0 is highest priority (use for homepage and key landing pages), 0.5 is the default. Use it sparingly as most pages can stay at 0.5.

How do I submit my sitemap to Google?

Go to Google Search Console → Sitemaps (under Index) → enter your sitemap URL such as https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml → click Submit. Google will then crawl the sitemap and start discovering your URLs.
