Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about these tools

How is EMI calculated for a loan?

EMI (Equated Monthly Instalment) = P × r × (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n - 1), where P is the principal loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate / 12 / 100), and n is the number of monthly instalments. For example, a ₹50 lakh home loan at 8.5% for 20 years gives an EMI of approximately ₹43,391. Our calculator also shows the total interest paid over the loan tenure.

What is a FIRE number and how do I calculate it?

FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) number is the amount of savings you need to retire — typically 25 times your annual expenses, based on the 4% safe withdrawal rate rule. If you spend ₹12 lakh per year, your FIRE number is ₹3 crore (₹12L × 25). With this corpus invested, you can withdraw 4% annually and statistically not run out of money over a 30+ year retirement. Our FIRE Calculator also shows Lean FIRE and Fat FIRE variants.

What is the difference between debt snowball and avalanche?

The Debt Snowball method pays off the smallest balance first, regardless of interest rate. This provides quick psychological wins as debts disappear. The Debt Avalanche method pays off the highest interest rate debt first, minimising total interest paid. Mathematically, the Avalanche method always saves more money. However, studies show people are more likely to stick with the Snowball method because of the motivation from early wins.

How much should I save monthly to reach ₹1 crore?

It depends on your timeline and expected return. At 12% annual return (historically reasonable for equity mutual funds): 10 years requires ₹43,100/month, 15 years requires ₹19,800/month, 20 years requires ₹10,000/month, 25 years requires ₹5,300/month. Starting earlier dramatically reduces the monthly burden due to compounding. Use our Savings Goal Calculator to calculate for any target amount and timeline.

Are these financial calculators suitable for Indian users?

Yes — the EMI calculator uses standard Indian banking conventions, the FIRE calculator uses INR and India-relevant return assumptions, and the debt and savings calculators work with any currency. The Indian Tax Calculators section has dedicated tools for GST, TDS, income tax, HRA, and take-home salary for Indian users.
