Why do SRE teams care about P99 more than average latency?

Average latency hides the worst user experiences. If 1% of users experience 10-second latency on an API with a 200ms average, those users are very unhappy but the average looks fine. P99 tells you what your slowest 1% of users experience. For APIs with 1000 req/s, P99 means 10 users per second have that experience.

What is a good P99 latency for a web API?

General guidelines: P50 under 100ms feels instant. P95 under 500ms is acceptable. P99 under 1 second is good. P99 under 2 seconds is adequate. P99 over 5 seconds needs immediate attention. For databases: P99 under 50ms is excellent. Adjust targets based on your SLO and user expectations.

What is the difference between P95 and P99?

P95 (95th percentile) means 95% of requests are faster than this value — 5% are slower. P99 means 99% are faster — 1% are slower. P99 is more sensitive to outliers and spikes. How do I reduce tail latency (P99)?

Common techniques: add timeouts everywhere, implement request hedging (duplicate slow requests), use connection pooling, identify and fix slow database queries (check EXPLAIN ANALYZE), add caching for expensive computations, scale horizontally to reduce queue depth, and use a CDN for static assets. Start by profiling the slowest 1% of requests to find the root cause.

How many data points do I need for reliable P99 measurement?

You need at least 100 data points for P99 (since P99 represents the 1 slowest in 100). For P99.9, you need 1,000+ points. For P99.99, you need 10,000+. With fewer points, percentiles become statistical noise. When load testing, ensure you collect enough samples before trusting tail percentile numbers.
